toothless

Dee lost his first tooth!

He was eating his ritual post-lunch green apple. All of the sudden he jumped up exclaiming "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!" He was too shocked to tell me what was wrong.

I couldn't figure out what was going on until I saw the bloody gap in his gaping mouth.

"Dee! You lost your tooth! So where is it? Uh oh. You really did LOSE your tooth!"

As we searched for a while I began to fear that he had swallowed his first lost tooth. Eventually we found it lodged in his apple.

It was almost as exciting as when he peed in the potty for the first time.

Or started walking.

Or smiled for the first time.

It makes me laugh to think how anxiously we waited for that little tooth to make its debut six years ago.

Now we celebrate as it falls out.

What a strange melancholy cycle parenthood is.

  2. What an interesting thought. I have never pondered the cycle of teeth, but it is true, such an exciting day when that tooth arrives, and so exciting when it falls out. Do you do the tooth fairy? Any special rituals with that? I am stocking up on ideas. How exciting!

  3. Wow! I never really thought of that before. At this point, I just want Emma to GET teeth. She has 6.5. She's almost 18 months old! I'm beginning to think they aren't going to grow in. Her other friends her age have all of their teeth. My poor baby.

Congrats on losing the tooth! I love the pic of the apple WITH the tooth in it! =)

  4. When my son lost his first tooth, he freaked out and was crying. We had forgotten to "prep" him about that. Oops!
Glad you found the tooth! Now the Tooth Fairy can come!!

  5. He is such a cute little bugger! Right into the apple. That's classic. I always wanted to lose a tooth in my food. Never happened that way. It was always just Dad with the pliers... Ok, not really. They just got to the point where I had to twist to break them off. Wow, that's kind of disgusting.
    Yey for Dee!!

  6. Seriously, it IS a strange and melancholy cycle! That's the perfect way to put it because we really do feel that way.

  7. My sons first tooth had to get lost by the dentist. The adult tooth was coming through behind his baby teeth and were barely wiggly, so had to get pulled. An Apple would be much cheaper.

  9. When Sissy lost her first tooth, we were on top of things, anxiously waiting for her to fall asleep so the Tooth Fairy could come. When Bubble lost his first and subsequent teeth, we forgot every time. Luckily, he didn't take it personally, and now makes Bug sleep in another room when the Tooth Fairy is expected so that he doesn't scare her away...
I must admit his childlike faith wasn't affected due to our faux pas...
