That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday

My poor little pathetic meme.

It just hasn't inspired the raging following. In fact only about one loyal follower (LISA!) has played along so far. I think the rest of you just come on over to the Silver Lining on That's-Not-My-Kid Thursdays to read my mortifying mommy moments and laugh. Laugh WITH me no doubt.

I think from here on out I'll drop the link up part of it and just use it for my own devices. Feel free to come on over and read my embarrassing kid stories and laugh WITH me...or AT me. If you would like to write your own That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday post, leave a comment with your address below and I will gladly hop on over and laugh at WITH you.

Onto the mortifying mommy moment...

Since even before Cee arrived, my six year old son Dee has been absolutely enthralled with the concept of breastfeeding. You could make all sorts of cracks about Freud or the male gender and its early fascination with the feminine personage, but I think his curious six year old mind is simply that...curious.

He has been asking all sorts of questions about how, where, why the baby eats and "what are those things for"? I subscribe to the honesty-is-the-best-policy policy and try to matter-of-factly explain how breastfeeding works to my son.

Only problem is...I kind of forgot to also explain how its not exactly mixed company conversation.

The week before we left Nevada I was at the school picking up Dee from kindergarten. When his teacher saw me she busted out laughing and said, "I have to tell you what Dee said today!"

Apparently my son educated his entire kindergarten class on just how breastfeeding works. Quite loudly too according to his teacher.

I haven't gotten any phone calls from incensed parents yet. Moving away has its advantages.

That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday

It's been a busy day of laundry and kindergarten class volunteering which doesn't leave much room for blogging. Even still it is Thursday. And you know what that means!

What kind of a mommy week has it been for you? Are you proud to claim your posterity or denying the genetic ties that bind?

As for me, it's been a pretty good week. Short of wanting to auction off one of my kiddos...But besides that, I can't complain. Shocked??

With no juicy stories of embarrassing mommy moments, can I take a different approach for That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday this week?

This little man is not my kid, but I still get to claim a little lot of maternal love and affection.

Meet my newest nephew, Micah Daniel!

Lots of dark hair and chub! SO CUTE!! Congratulations on your reunion, little family!

That's not my kid, but I'll take him anyway!

That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday

It's high time for a That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday Link Up, don't ya' think?

Here's mine. After you read it, make sure to post your mortified mommy moment on your own blog and link up at the bottom. Or just share in the comments. Whatever floats your boat.

On Tuesday evening Dee (5), Elle (2), and I sat in the lobby of Jeigh's (4) dance studio while she was in her ballet class. Parents and siblings aren't allowed in the actual dance rooms, I assume to allow the students to completely focus on the teacher.

They have placed a screen in the lobby so that parents can watch from a distance. The TV screen has four smaller screens within: One for Jeigh's dance class, a second dance class, a piano class, and an empty room that has two bathrooms leading off of it.

My five-year old son Dee is enthralled with the concept of this monitoring system. He's clever enough that he's figured out where that empty room is and realizes it's being monitored.

This particular day, he asked if he could go to the bathroom.

Me: "Sure, do you know where it is?"

Dee: "Yep!" and runs off to answer the call of nature.

Elle is asking me to read to her so I get a little distracted. Before long, I refocus on the monitor to watch Jeigh's class when to my horror I see my son on the bottom left hand of the screen, walking out of the bathroom with his pants down around his ankles. He's hardly paying attention to his clothing situation. He's intent on finding one thing: the camera. Which he does and begins waving like he's in a parade.

Knowing I can't get back to him quickly enough or yell loud enough to be heard, I send a wish up to the Northern Star that he'll get his pants pulled up before he turns six, or at least before the lobby full of moms see him and make the connection who's streaking child this is.

After awhile he finally gets his pants back up {whew} but then begins break dancing...or seizing (I couldn't really tell) on the floor. Do I dare hope the other moms still haven't seen? Nope. I hear the snickers behind me.

So now I ask myself: Do I claim him or pretend he belongs to the bored looking dad standing outside the building?

I never get the chance to salvage my own dignity, never mind his, when he runs down the hall, hops on my lap, and says loudly, "Mommy! Did you see me waving?? DID YOU?!"

That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday

We've been stuck at home all week so I can't really think of anything too embarrassing that my kids have said or done in public lately. That hasn't kept them from saying things at home of course. Here's a random sampling of kids-say-the-darnedest-things fun from this past week.

Anger Management

I caught five-year old Dee playing with my exercise ball after I had asked him multiple times not to play with it. I took it away from him and put it up high. He looked at me and very calmly said, "Mom. You make me all heated inside."

Me: What did you say?

Dee (VERY calmly): You make me heated. Like fire and flames are going to come out. All heated inside.

Me: Are you trying to say you are angry?

Dee: Yep. But more like fire.

The Plan of Happiness

Jeigh to Dee: Heavenly Father wants us to be happy. Heavenly Father wants us to have stickers. Lots and lots of stickers.

Gender Selection

The kids and I were talking about what people are. I explained that we are humans. They just looked at me confused.

Me: We aren't dogs. We aren't monkeys or fish or birds. We are humans.

Dee (looking like he's figured it out): Oooooohhh. Humans!

Then Dee turns to Jeigh and explains, "Jeigh, boys are HU-mans and girls are MA-ams. Right, Mom?"

I'm a Barbie Girl

The other day we were getting ready to go swimming. As I came out in my swimsuit, Dee looked at me and said, "Mommy! You look beautiful!", to which Jeigh added "Yeah Mommy! You're like Barbie!". Ummm, hardly, but hey! I'll take it. You don't think they've figured out how to butter me up yet, do you? Nah. I'm going to stick with my uncanny resemblance to Barbie. {snort}

Barbie Hits Bottom

Oh, don't think they're always so generous with their comments. Yesterday we were once again getting ready to go swimming and Dee said, "Mom! Your bum is HUGE!"

Me (sarcastically): Thanks Dee.

Dee: You're welcome. It's HUUUGE!

Oh wait! I did think of a public one!

We were at Walmart the other day (when are we NOT at Walmart?). As we walked past a couple of girls that were kindly waiting for us to pass, three-year old Jeigh, chock full of all sorts of teenage attitude, smartly yelled (yes, yelled), "EXCUUUUSE US! We're walking here!"

That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday

We were at a restaurant as a family last week, feeling a little frazzled as we usually do when dining out with three children ages five and under. An elderly couple near us got up from their table, and as they walked out, stopped to tell us what beautiful children we have. Well, I could agree with them there. Who doesn't think they have the cutest kids?

But then the woman continued on by saying how well-behaved they were and how obvious their good behavior was because we were such excellent parents and really knew what we were doing.

{cue the sound of crickets chirping}

Joe and I swapped one of those looks between us and I could tell he was thinking what I was thinking: "Stick around lady. You won't feel the same by the end of the evening."

Nonetheless, it was sweet for them to pay us this sincere compliment. They wished me a Happy Mothers Day and walked out.

Sure enough, just as the door closed behind them, Jeigh let out a HUGE belch. Not a second later, Dee loudly announced for the restaurant to hear, "You sound just like my mom and dad!!", and they both burst into belly laughs.

Yup. That's more like it.

That's-Not-My-Kid Thursday

Do your kids ever say or do something in public that is so off-the-wall, so painfully honest, so embarrassing, that as wrong as you know it is, you look the other way and pretend (just for a bit) you don't know them???

Come on, admit it! Even the best supermoms have those moments. Don't feel too bad; one day they are bound to do the same thing when we are embarrassing them in public. Turn about is fair play, right?

Well, here's your chance to share your "proud" parenting moment of the week with the blogosphere. Link up and then check out the other red-faced mommy bloggers out there. We can pat each other on the back for playing it cool; laugh with (or at) others' public (mis)adventures; or just take solace in knowing your kids aren't the only kids out there who misbehave at church, accost random strangers, or pee in public places. Not that I would know anything about any of those kinds of things! Because of course...That's not my kid!
