Food Allergy Mama: A History
*sets timer for 15 minutes*
Let's try this again, shall we? I promised I would share my story of how I became a "food allergy mama".
Let's start at the very beginning...
It was early Spring 2005. I was a first time mom learning the ropes of that altogether wonderful and terrible thing we call parenting. My first born baby Dee was only a few months old when one day I accidentally spilled some milk on his face. This isn't untypical. I'm pretty clumsy. What was unusual is that within moments my baby son's face changed right before my eyes. Where clear, soft baby skin had been, now there were red rashy hives.
Hmm. Well that's odd.
I figured the liquid had just irritated his skin, popped him in the tub, washed him down, and soon the rash disappeared.
Allow me to interject here. As a first time mom I had no clue whatsoever about food allergies. I was still trying to figure out how to change this boy's diaper without getting peed on. I have no personal history of food allergies. Neither does my husband. Nor do our families. Food allergies were for dweeby kids that wore coke bottle bottom glasses, had sea monkey farms and overprotective, hypochondriac mothers. Little did I know that I was about to become one of those overprotective, hypochondriac mothers.
Over the next few months we began to notice that the rash was not a one-time incident. Dee would mysteriously rash up every now and then. As we looked for clues, we gathered it was happening where we were planting kisses on his face or belly or hands. Soon we alighted on the possible source. Milk. Anytime we were eating yogurt, ice cream, cheese, or drinking milk and then kissing our sweet little baby, he was breaking out into a rash and hives.
At his 6 month check up I talked to Dee's pediatrician about our concerns. He queried that our boy might have a dairy allergy. "But it's rather unlikely considering there's no family history". Still he referred us to a pediatric allergist.
One pediatric allergist appointment later, we had our answer. The skin tests and blood work revealed what we had suspected. Not only was our six month old baby boy allergic to milk, he was deathly allergic. As we sat in stunned silence the doctor educated my husband and I about foreign things like anaphylaxis, epi-pens, Benadryl, food restrictions, medical bracelets, and more.
It was overwhelming. I had just learned how to feed my little son his first solid foods, rice cereal. Now I was panicking. Is there milk in rice cereal???
As we arrived home we began to scour our cupboards and fridge looking for "milk" or any of the other aliases for dairy (dry milk, nonfat milk, whey, lactose, casein, sodium caseinate, lactoglobulin, lactalbuminin, etc.) all of our foods. No, milk is not in baby rice cereal, but it is in a myriad of other foods we had in our house. Cereal, bread, crackers, soup, chocolate, hot dogs, margarine, bouillon, gravy mixes, frosting, and of course yogurt, cheese, milk, ice cream. There was even milk in some of his jars of baby food I had already purchased.
This was impossible. Milk was in everything. What on earth was our kid going to eat???

I Can See Clearly Now, the Money's Gone

Last week I found myself being pressured by a salesman. And I totally caved into his sales pitch.
I am now the proud (and rather befuddled) owner of not one, but TWO brand new pairs of...
EYE GLASSES?!
Glasses! Of all things to be pressured to buy.
I'm shaking my head as I write this.
How did one little weaselly salesman pressure me into buying two pairs of glasses that were not cheap by any definition?
The guy wasn't attractive. At all.
He didn't even have that presence that some salesmen have.
He was just pushy and really good at taking me on an all-expenses paid (me being the one who's paying all the expenses) guilt trip.
"Your son is practically blind! You don't want him to be blind for an entire week while we fix his old glasses do you? Do you?!"
Okay. That's not exactly how he said it, but that's how it came through my Be-a-Good-Mommy filter.
I don't know if eyeglass salesmen make a commission, but he also gave me some sob story about his mom having a really expensive surgery earlier that year and that he was now broke.
I think he was trying to connect with me.
Because obviously a mom of four kids is definitely broke.
At least that's what he assumed (and he would be just about right, but regardless!)
And since I am a mom of four kids and probably broke that's also why he decided to try to sell me every bell and whistle that can come with a pair of eye glasses.
Super sonic hydroponic superfluous lens coating does what exactly???
Even as I found myself agreeing to the purchase, I looked at him thinking to myself, "I don't really like you and how on earth did I let you convince me to do this?"
But the whole transaction took place so quickly that I didn't even really have time to say, "HOLD UP!!"
I'm not even sure I got the frames I wanted for myself or my son.
See, the eye doctor was incredibly nice. So nice I wanted to pick him up, take him home, and adopt him.
But I believe he may be in on the scheme.
During my eye exam he put those nasty little drops in my eyes to dilate them and by the time I found myself picking out frames I could hardly see my hand in front of my face. I couldn't even see the price tags on the frames.
Brilliant sales tactic, no? Blind 'em, then take 'em for all they're worth!
I was kind of lucky to make it out of there with my wallet still in my bag and all four children accounted for.
I think I may have needed an interpreter or mediator or lawyer just to purchase my glasses.
Or at least a nanny because I'm fairly certain my four kids were in on the heist too.
How was I supposed to make a clear-headed decision whilst repeatedly telling three of my kids to stop running around the office and to pick up the toys they had scattered all over, bouncing a fussy infant on my hip, and stopping the receptionists from feeding tootsie rolls to my milk allergy kid?
All while squinting through Bambi-sized pupils.
Car salesmen could learn a thing or two from the vision office.

What the HCG is in There?!
What better way to follow-up a post on number two than with a post guest-starring number one?
I kid. I kid.
No really. I've got a kid in this bloated belly of mine that causes me to dash to the bathroom with number one urges all the time and after a lousy ultrasound experience I am dying to know what-the-hCG is in there. Boy? Girl? Parasitic alien larva??
Eww.
Since I couldn't rely on my doctor tostick around long enough to do his job tell me what gender my baby was, I had to take maternal matters into my own hands. What a perfect opportunity to test out a few gender prediction tests and old wives' tales, eh? I pulled out my dusty rusty high school chemistry and biology skills and set to it.
Here are the results of my embryonic experiments (includes photographic evidence and field notes):
The "Intelligender" Gender Prediction Test
This "patent pending" at home urine test claims to be able to predict your baby's gender accurately. I read reviews on this product awhile ago and they seemed to be less than satisfying, but I just couldn't resist after watching THIS clip from The Doctors.
The price tag was steep enough that I am embarrassed to admit how much I spent on it. $39.95 Desperate times call for desperate measures, people. (Please excuse the pictures of human waste. All in the name of science, my dear Watson.)
Gender according to the Intelligender Gender Prediction Test: GIRL
The Draino Test
My friend Myya clued me in on this one. The idea is to mix urine with Draino and observe the color change. I found the official instructions HERE and I found the discrediting information HERE on Snopes.com. Forget the critics. All frontiers must be explored.

Gender according to the Draino Test: GIRL
The Chinese Calender Prediction Test
I have heard numerous people swear by this test. Go HERE to find the directions. Warning: You must have a college degree to decipher the results of this test as it requires you to configure your Chinese age and Chinese Lunar Conception Month. It's allGreek Chinese to me.
Gender according to the Chinese Calender: GIRL
The Older Sibling's Hairline Test
My friend Brittany told me about this Native American gender prediction test. You observe the hairline of the immediate older sibling of the baby. If the hairline is a V line, the baby will be the opposite gender than the older sibling. If the hairline is a straight line, the baby will be the same gender. Elle is the older sibling in this case. See what a willing participant she is in our research?
Brittany said we needed to look very closely as this test can be easily botched. It was difficult with a squirming, uncooperative toddler, but in my observations I concluded Elle has a V hairline.
Gender according to Older Sibling's Hairline Test: BOY
The Older Sibling's Clinginess Test
An old wives' tale claims that the clinginess of the older sibling during the pregnancy can predict the gender of the next baby. If the older sibling is more clingy than usual, the baby is of the opposite gender than the older sibling. If the older sibling is more independent, the baby is the same gender as the older sibling.
I believe the pictorial evidence below illustrates Elle's current level of clinginess.

Gender according to the Older Sibling's Clinginess Test: BOY
The Previous Pregnancy Past Test
Some say to figure out the gender of your current baby you only have to look so far as your own past. Are you carrying this baby similar to how you carried your previous babies? When I was pregnant with Dee, everyone commented on how huge I was (just what every pregnant lady wants to hear). With both girls, all I heard was how small I was, how you couldn't even tell I was pregnant. (So what you're saying is...I'm fat. Umm...thanks.) In this case, this pregnancy resembles my girls' pregnancies more than it does my son's.
Gender according to Previous Pregnancy Past: GIRL
The Daddy's Instinct Test
So far, Joe has guessed what each of our children's genders were before we ever saw the ultrasound pictures. He just knows.
Gender according to Daddy's Instinct: GIRL
The Mother's Instinct Test
So far, I have been wrong about each of our children. Every single time. Apparently my mother's instinct compass got discombobulated somewhere along the way. If you want to know what the gender is, ask me, listen to what I say I am absolutely sure it is...and think the exact opposite.
Gender according to Mommy's Instinct: I say BOY. So better make that GIRL.
To summarize my official and unquestionable scientific research:
Out of 8 gender prediction tests, tales, and 'tuitions, 6 gender prediction tests predict GIRL and 2 predict BOY
In short, the previously detailed research leads us to the conclusion that a baby girl is in our near future.
P.S. I had another ultrasound today...It's a GIRL! Make of that what you will Intelligender.

Whistle While You Work

Don't you just love when someone loves their job and it shows?
Does it seem to anyone else that you come across so many grouchy, intolerant people in day-to-day transactions that finding someone who is kind and personable and willing to go the extra mile rare?
Today I came across a couple of gems and I found it so refreshing and delightful I couldn't help but feel it deserved a blog post.
I had an OBGYN appointment today and I walked into the office preparing for the worst. Since Joe was working, I had my three littles in tow (5, almost 4, and barely 2 years old). If much of a wait is involved it doesn't usually bode well for anyone: the fellow "waiters", me, or the three kids who are absolute pros at causing chaos and calamity...at least when we get out of earshot of the public, if you know what I mean.
Anyway! The wait wasn't too bad. I was prepared with books and good humor. The kids responded well. And then... SHE came in. I've never met a midwife before. I've heard the rumors of their glorious goodness, but could never testify of it myself...until today.
The moment she walked in the room, the world was set right. She warmly introduced herself, shaking my hand. And then instead of sitting down and getting down to business, she approached each of my three children, shaking their hands, asking their names and ages, and chatting a bit about this or that with each of them. She even kissed my girls on the back of their little hands. Wow! Brave lady. I mean, who knows where those hands have been?
Then she sat and talked to me. And I mean really talked. She treated me like a person and not a piece of baby-making meat. She showed me my chart and went over all the numbers and lab results and whatever else.
One complaint I have with the baby-delivering industry is once they find out you've already had a baby (or two...or three), they instantly assume you know it all and skip the details. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but my retentive memory is about as effective as a strainer holding tomato soup, especially since having babies. I forget a lot of stuff! I pull out my What to Expect book each and every time I am pregnant. I was so appreciative of this midwife being thorough without being condescending.
Through the appointment she sat comfortably instead of edging toward the door like so many doctors do. Whether or not she had somewhere else to be, she didn't show it. I was her priority and nothing else mattered. It really was a beautiful experience! Maybe this is normal for others, but after some of the experiences I've had, this was rare and welcome!
As the appointment drew to a close, she gave me a warm hug and even a kiss on the cheek. To be honest, that would probably kind of freak me out with anyone else I had just met minutes before. But for some reason, we were already fast friends and this was perfectly acceptable.
It was just so lovely to meet someone who was happy to be in the profession they were in! I sure hope this woman is on call when this kid makes its grand appearance. Maybe I'll have to cross my legs or hang upside down for awhile until she is.
After we left the office, we headed over to a little lunch spot that sells homemade soups, sandwiches, and baked goods. Forget how good the food is; I would go in just to be gushed over by the little ladies in this place. Every time I go there I swear someone is either going to feed me my soup, spoonful by spoonful, or lick their thumb and rub a smudge off my face. Talk about service with a smile. I love it!
These people who take their work so personally make such a great impression. I would love to tell them how they made my day. How their smiles, kind words, and professionalism with warmth left me so happy and cheered that I felt the need to write a blog post about it.
But... I could just picture what would happen.
You think I am a great writer? You should see me talk in person. Disaster with a capital D. It all comes out very mumbled, very cheesy, very red-in-the-face. This is one of the biggest reasons I never want to meet any of my bloggy friends in person. I love you all. I think you are fantastic. But sorry...I can only take this relationship screen-deep.
So, anyone have any brilliant ideas on how to tactfully tell someone you think they are the bee's knees at what they do??? Do you find that these service-with-a-smile stars are far and in between?
